The primary function of a guitar amplifier is to strengthen the electric signal picked up from a guitar and send it to the speakers, but in addition most guitar amplifiers today will be expected to include features whereby the tone or sound of the guitar can be modified by emphasising certain frequencies. In addition, a guitar amp may also produce electronic effects such as reverb and tremolo and it would be fair to say that individual amps can produce their own distinctive sounds that will be suited to a particular style or genre of guitar playing.

Many experienced guitarists will have their favourite amp that enhances their playing, but for the newcomer or novice there is a wide-ranging selection of amps to select from, and at Achilles Amplification we have a choice of heads or combos to suit every purpose, style or level of expertise.

At Achilles, located in the outskirts of Melbourne, we produce high end, hand wired guitar amps of exceptional quality which befit our brand name, which is synonymous with excellence – and all of our amps and cabinets are all made locally by our own team of highly skilled craftsmen. From the feature laden Apollo Nyx 5W which is ideally suited to studio recording, to the Zephyr 85 which is a great choice for stage and public performances - and dozens of choices in between, we have the right amp for you.

And when you have decided on the technical specifications of your chosen amplifier, we offer incredible options for the appearance of your amp. The combination of choices on the colour of Tolex, grill cloth, piping and carry handles presents literally 1000’s of options, meaning that you can create your own customised look – anything from a traditional, old-school look to something more contemporary that will definitely catch the eye. Furthermore, if you really are a fan of the aged look, we can produce a brand-new amp for you that is dressed to give the appearance of a well worn much travelled item that perhaps will compliment your other older or vintage equipment. Whatever your style is, here at Achilles we can provide exactly what you want.

As well as producing technically excellent professional guitar amplifiers, we also create cabinets of distinction, all manufactured from Russian Baltic birch ply with dovetailed joints, which unlike some other materials used in cabinets will actually enhance rather than spoil sound quality. Again, we have sizes and options to meet all requirements from single 12-inch speaker to large quad cabinets, recessed handles, rubber feet and castors, and wiring options – all perfectly hand crafted here in Australia.

Printed circuit board amps may cost less than a hand wired amp, but our hand wired amps are considered more durable and in the event of a component failure are easier to service and repair.
